Principal Systems Engineer

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to join an innovative engineering organisation developing advanced, safety-critical technologies. This is an opportunity to play a key role within a multidisciplinary engineering team, leading systems engineering activities across the full product lifecycle, from concept development through to verification and validation.
The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, software, hardware and programme teams to ensure complex systems are developed in accordance with industry best practice and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities

Lead systems engineering activities throughout the system development lifecycle.

Capture, analyse and manage stakeholder and system requirements.

Develop system architectures and functional decompositions.

Define system interfaces and support interface management activities.

Conduct trade studies and technical assessments to support engineering decisions.

Support system integration, verification and validation planning.

Ensure requirements traceability throughout the development lifecycle.

Produce and review technical documentation, specifications and engineering artefacts.

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve technical issues.

Support design reviews and contribute to technical governance activities.

Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior systems engineers.
Experience & Qualifications

Degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Significant experience within complex, multidisciplinary engineering programmes.

Strong understanding of the systems engineering lifecycle and best practices.

Experience managing system requirements using industry-standard requirements management tools.

Knowledge of systems architecture, interface management and requirements verification.

Experience supporting system integration and verification activities.

Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Desirable

Experience working within regulated or safety-critical industries.

Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles.

Familiarity with requirements management and systems modelling tools.

Experience working within large, multidisciplinary engineering teams.
