Overview

Turner / Machinist – Conventional & Manual Turning

Confident setting up a four-jaw chuck, screw cutting and machining precision components from engineering drawings?

VHR is recruiting an experienced Turner / Machinist on behalf of an engineering and surface technology business.

This is a hands-on machine-shop role offering varied work across the manufacture, repair and modification of precision components. You’ll use your machining knowledge to select tooling, set up jobs and produce finished components to tight tolerances.

The role

  • Set up and operate conventional/manual lathes, using three-jaw and four-jaw chucks, faceplates and centres.
  • Carry out turning, facing, boring, drilling, grooving and screw cutting.
  • Select suitable tooling, speeds, feeds and work-holding methods.
  • Work from engineering drawings to achieve specified dimensions and surface finishes.
  • Inspect your work using metric and imperial micrometers, bore gauges, verniers and dial indicators.
  • Identify and correct machining issues, taking ownership of quality throughout each job.
  • Support other machining operations where your skills and experience allow.

What you’ll bring

  • At least 3 years’ relevant experience, ideally 3–5 years or more, in a precision engineering or machine-shop environment.
  • Strong practical experience operating conventional/manual lathes.
  • The ability to independently set up work using four-jaw chucks and faceplates.
  • Confidence in screw cutting and thread machining.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings and work independently to tight tolerances.
  • A machining, vocational or technical qualification, or equivalent practical experience.

CNC/Fanuc experience would be an advantage, alongside your conventional turning skills.

Why consider it?

If you enjoy the skill involved in setting up and machining a component, this role offers the opportunity to put that experience to work across manufacturing and repair jobs, with responsibility for your work from initial setup through to final inspection.
