Overview

Cylindrical Grinder / Cylindrical Grinding Operator

Precision work. Varied components. A role where your machining skills count.

Are you an experienced Cylindrical Grinder who takes pride in achieving tight tolerances and a consistently high-quality finish?

VHR is recruiting on behalf of a specialist engineering and surface technology business looking for a skilled Cylindrical Grinding Operator to join its production team.

You’ll take responsibility for setting up and operating cylindrical grinding machines, working from engineering drawings to produce precision components across a range of materials and sizes. This is a hands-on opportunity for someone confident managing the grinding process from setup through to final inspection.

What you’ll be doing

  • Setting up and operating cylindrical grinding machines for external and, where required, internal grinding.

  • Selecting, mounting and dressing grinding wheels to suit the material and finish required.

  • Adjusting speeds, feeds and machine settings to achieve specified dimensions and tight tolerances.

  • Reading engineering drawings and interpreting machining and surface-finish requirements.

  • Checking components using micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators and bore gauges.

  • Identifying and correcting dimensional or surface-finish issues during machining.

  • Working closely with production and quality colleagues to maintain standards.

  • Keeping accurate inspection records and maintaining a safe, organised work area.

What you’ll bring

  • At least three years’ hands-on cylindrical grinding experience with precision engineering components.

  • Proven experience in external cylindrical grinding; internal grinding experience would be an advantage.

  • Confidence reading engineering drawings and working independently to specified tolerances.

  • Strong practical knowledge of grinding-wheel selection, dressing, speeds and feeds.

  • Competence using precision measuring equipment.

  • An ITI, vocational or technical qualification in machining or mechanical engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Experience in oil and gas, aerospace, automotive or another precision engineering environment would be beneficial.
